When it comes to attracting customers to your business, getting the word out is usually the first hurdle. That’s why flyers have become a marketing staple for so many businesses. For street marketing, direct mail campaigns and event promotion – a flyer puts your brand in the hands of potential customers, and the core principles that make them work so well are unbeatable: they’re cost-efficient and easy to distribute.
When creating flyers for your business there’s lots of design elements to consider – fonts, colours, copy and images – but your flyer size also plays a part. Below we’ll answer your burning questions, like, what is a standard flyer size? What size is a DL flyer? And, we’ll give you our tips on how to design the best flyer for your needs.
What size is a flyer?
At VistaPrint, we offer the following flyer dimensions:
- A7 (74 x 105 mm)
- A6 (105 x 148 mm)
- DL (99 x 210 mm)
- A5 (148 x 210 mm)
- A4 (210 x 297 mm)
- A3 (297 x 420 mm)
Our designers are often asked, what is the best size for a flyer? And, with so many options to choose from, the answer is a little complex depending on your needs. Let’s break down what size flyer is best for you:
An A4 flyer most resembles a standard piece of paper, so if you’re looking for something classic and instantly recognisable, this could be the flyer size for you. This flyer format also lets you take up space with more info or an enlarged design.
The dimensions for A6 flyers are 105 x 148 mm. A6 is one of our most popular flyer sizes and is a truly versatile option. They’re perfect for handing out in the street, leaving stacks in local shops or putting into people’s letterboxes.
Half-page flyers (A5) are great for sales and special events where you need to make an impact, but only need a small amount of space. If you need to distribute a lot of flyers and can compress your message into a tighter space, then an even smaller flyer format like A7 could be the way to go.
DL flyers are well-suited for price lists and restaurant menus, while a large A3 flyer creates a can’t-miss message wherever you display it.
Design guidelines
We’ve got thousands of templates you can pick from to create your flyer – thanks to our amazing designers. And you can upload your own design, too – it’s as simple as selecting an image or file on your computer. But however you choose to design, there are some important guidelines to keep in mind.
Note: These measurements are for our standard flyer size (A6). Our other options, have similar bleed and safe printing areas in relation to their actual size. You can always check the details on our flyer product page.
Bleed Area: 151 x 108 mm
If you’ve got a background colour or pattern, make sure it extends a bit beyond the actual size of the flyer. That way, you’ll never end up with white borders, even if the cards are cut slightly off centre.
Trim Size: 148 x 105 mm
Just like the name says, this is where we cut your flyers. We do our absolute best to make sure all your flyers are centred and uniform, but be sure to check the safe printing area when completing your design.
Safe Printing Area: 145 x 102 mm
You probably have any important text or design elements within this area, which isn’t much smaller than the actual size of the flyer. To guarantee nothing gets cut off, keep everything inside this box.
Flyer Size in Pixels: 2528 x 1795 pixels
Pixels are important to your flyer design as they determine the print quality of your image. Be sure to use a high resolution image that has the appropriate DPI and pixels for your flyer size.
More flyer design tips
Now that you have the lowdown on flyer dimensions, it’s time to dive into your flyer design. The right design on your flyer can really make your message stand out on the page and complement your flyer format.
- Organise your information clearly. A lot of complicated information can overwhelm people when reading a flyer. Identify the top few things you want a customer to know and then focus on those points. An eye-catching headline is key (like a sale message) and including a strong call to action (visiting your website or store) gives people a way to learn more once they’ve become interested in what you have to say.
- Stand out with photography or a logo. Make sure your images are high resolution and print ready. We recommend a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch) on every image printed, meaning that a background photograph on an A4 flyer would need to be 2550 x 3300 pixels, or around 8.4 megapixels.
- Consider your format. If you have more copy than you can comfortably fit on one side of a flyer, two-sided printing lets you get more from a single sheet of paper. This is especially useful for product sheets and informational flyers. You can also experiment with folded styles when you have more information to share.
- Use colour and fonts to your advantage. Embracing bold colour choices and contrasts helps your flyer draw the eye, even at a distance. And speaking of drawing the eye, make sure you don’t go below 10 points for body copy – you want everyone to be able to easily read what you have to say.
- Create a consistent look. It’s easy to use your font choice, logo and colours to create a matching look across other marketing products, like business cards, signage and postcards. With a few matching products, you’re well on your way to establishing a recognisable, professional brand.
